Busy bloke Millsy finds time to walk

Each weekday morning the voice of 6PR breakfast announcer Steve (Millsy) Mills floats across the suburbs, but less well known is that he often walks through many of them. Millsy is passionate about finding time to be active every day. Choosing different areas including the suburbs, the city, Fremantle, the beach and King’s Park, he walks for 30 to 40 minutes and has done so every day for the past two years.

“Whoever came up with the idea of finding thirty is on the right track,” Millsy says. “If the nation started walking every day for at least thirty minutes we’d be a happier, healthier nation.”

Millsy keeps a diary noting his walks, makes a chart of his weight and generally keeps an eye on his overall health. “I don’t just walk to keep the weight off though,” Millsy says. “It started as a way to zone out from everything going on, but I quickly realised that it was helping my metabolism, circulation and health in general.”

Although busy, Millsy (48), who joined 6PR in 2004 after working in a variety of jobs including as an accountant and teacher, says he makes physical activity a priority in his day. “I’ve walked on and off for the past 10 to 15 years, but I’m really into it at the moment,” Millsy says. “I’ve been known to get up out of bed if I’ve forgotten to go for a walk and go at 10.30pm at night.

“I prefer walking by myself – I guess that’s easier if you’re a bloke – but I see plenty of people with their partner or family dog. The key is just to get out there and do it.”

The Find Thirty® every day campaign urges all Western Australian adults to take Millsy’s lead, get your diaries out and commit to thirty minutes of physical activity every day.

People who plan physical activity into their daily routine are more likely to achieve the daily thirty minutes of moderate physical activity required for good health.

The Find Thirty®every day campaign has a free personal physical activity planner, to help plan and record physical activity so you stay on track.  The planner also includes practical tips and advice on goal setting, keeping active and staying safe.  Visit the Find Thirty® every day campaign resources page to order your free copy of the physical activity planner.
